Assignment 5
1.)The "Secind Shift" is the idea that most women work one shift at the office or factory and a "second shift" at home. So most women who are working to make an income and at the same time come back home and have to maintain the household are in reality having two jobs not just one.
2.) The family myth created by Nancy and Evan Holt was that women take a deeper interest than men in the problems of juggling work with family life which results in stress that women take out on their husbands. Most men unfortuaneltey suffer the severe reprecussion of what is a transitional phase of American family life. Because Nancy Nancy(Evan's wife and mother of their child) did so much work because she felt an obligation to, while Evan on the other hand did very little housework and played with his four-year old son Joey, at his conveinance it created a and uneven platform in which Nancy did much more work then Evan did. Juggling the demands of work with family created much more stress for Nany than Evan in that she did much more shince she cared.
3.) The purpose of family myths is so that couples can live with unfairness in their relationships and to minimize conflict. IHoschschild shows how couples create family myths to live with inequality in their lives.
4.) When I start a family i plan to divide houseland labor and child care 50/50. on days i work more hours than my husband he will do the household chores and take care of the children and on days where he works more i will do the household work and take care of the children. If we happen to need outisde help we will higher a nanny. On the weekends when we are off we will both spend times with the children and each toher. I plan to work full time but i am willing to sacrafice if needed if i have children and work part time

Assignment 6
1.)The members of the family in the book are Lajoe the mother, and her two sons Pharoah Rivers who is nine and his older brother Lafeyette who is twelve. Though Lajoe is the mother she depends on her sons just as much as they depend on her. The boys would do anything for their mother. Not only did Lajoe play as a mother figure to her children but to her childrens friends and to the community. She was known for her genorosity, and always was willing to give out a helping hand no matter what the circumstance, whether it be giving advice to people or feeding people if they didnt have ood to eat .
2.)The housing project in which the family lives is what the children called "Hornets" or more frequently "the projects" Their buliding had no enclosed lobby, a dark tunnel cut through the middle of the buliding, and the wind and strangers passed freely along it. Since darkness engulfed the building's corridors, even in the daytime, the residents always carried flashlights. On Lafeyette's 12th birthday he received $8. Him and his cousin Dede's were walking and their was and gunshots flew him and Dedes hit the ground and stayed low. Bythe time the shooting was over and they made it inside Lafeyette only had 50cents of his money left because the rest trickled from his pocketsduring the shooting. Where they live is not a conductive to a positive childhood for the children in that it is unsafe, and the building is in bad shape, especially since the bulding is in a bad neighborhood and people can just walk through their buidlding and strangers who at times may be unsafe/dangerus people could just walk in at any time. The negative affect of Lafeyette looking his money because of the shootout in his neighbored, is that now he may feel as if he gets something it isnt worth receiving because his money was taking away from him and it wasnt even his fault. he may start to feel helpless.
3.)Many of the adults in the neighborhood had aged with the neighborhood, looking as worn and empty as the abandoned stores that lined the once-thriving Madison Street.Lajoe(mother) had watched her neigborhoodslowly decayed, as had many urban communities over the past decades. First the middle class whites fled to the suburbs. Then the middle class blacks left for safer neighborhoods. So all that was left mostly was the poor blacks. Over the past 10yrs the city had lost a third of its manufacturing jobs, and there were few jobs left for those who lived in Hornet. Unemployment was offficially estimated at 19percent, unofficially it was probably much higher. Neighborhoods current state is in great depression, because the employment rate is decreasing and the neighborhood is pooras a result.
4.)If asked to improve one or two aspects of the housing project or neighborhood to improve the opportunities for this family, the social policy i would implement to enact for a positive change is Firstto rebuild or get repaired with money from grants. Second to give money to those who make $40,000 or less in a yr. Give a montly check of about $200 to the poor so that they would at least be able to afford food .

Reaction to the Election
Offcourse as an African American female I am very proud to see that someone of my race has finally made it into the White House. I was happy to hear from my grandmother who is now 61yrs old who called me and said she is happy that she was able to live on the day that an African American became president. The outcome of the election, shows that America as a whole continues to slowly but surely progress. Especially on the topic of equality. From Rosa Parks sitting on the bus when, blacks were not allowed, to Martin Luther King Jr. speaking out on Blacks behalf, to presently in 2008 were our 44th president is African American. My overall reaction to this election is that because of Barack Obama's determination, different races all over America now have a true example of what someone who stands their ground and remains courageous can accomplish.

I am an African American female. My ethinicity is Jamaican and American. My reaction to the video is that its depressing to see that in the 21st century ignorance on race still exist. This video really touched me because i know people personally who are ashamed of being black, because of how they were raised. We are brain washed into believing that black people are "inferior" and white people are "superior". As a result blacks will even violate their bodies and skin, created by God, to try and look pretty by white standards. Some children unfortuanetely are taught at a young age that lighter skin is much pretteir than darker. As a result children who are dark skinned have alot of self esteem issues because they think they are ugly because of what the've been taught to believe.

Last summer along with this summer it was very difficult for me to find a job. The main reason for this was because of my age. Last summer I was 17 and this summer for most of the summer I was still 17. Most jobs were looking for college students or adults 18 an older. Though i would tell each job manager for all the jobs I applied for that I would be 18 in the beginnging of august most of the jobs turned me down and made it clear that I would have to be 18yrs old now. Now that I am 18 and have a job, I would say that it is much easier for a young adult with a highschool diploma to receive a job than it is for a 16yr old.

Hello my name is Zareen T. I'm from Blooomfield, New Jersey. I am currently a freshman. I'm an early childhood an education major. I chose this major because i love working with children. I volunteered to work in an elementary school called Watsessing Elementary School in Bloomfield and really enjoyed working with the children. I also did volunteer work at UNC Hospital in North Carolina. I worked as an assitant in the speech pathology department. I got the chance to work with children with speech impediments, autism, down syndrome, and brain injuries. I feel children are the future and I get a sense of satisfaction when i know that i contributed something valuable in a child's life. My career plans are to become an elementary school teacher or a speech pathologists. I do plan to marry but not until i have finished college. I dont see myself traveling the world because of my fear of heights on planes. I live with my mother and younger sister. My parents are divorced and both are still living. One activity that I absolutely enjoy doing with my family is are yearly famlily vacations.
Wikis is so far kind of confusing, but i'm sure I'll get the hang of it. The main thing I learned from the video was the three main components in using wiki which are edit, save and link. One of the funniest things that ever happened to me occurred when i was in the fourth grade. I attented catholic school and we had gym every thursday. I accidetly left all my sneakers at my moms house and had no sneakers to wear for gym being that i was at my dads house. My dad made me put on his size 15 sneaker, when i at the time was only a size 6. The kids in my fourth grade class laughed at me an called me duck feet throughout that whole day. When i was younger I cried because I felt so embarrased, but now that I'm older I just look back an laugh at this incident.
